Intel to buy Apple? Not as crazy as you might think.

Today, Robert X. Cringely let's loose with some free thinking on why in the heck Apple would move to Intel. On the surface it sure seems like a great thing...right? Problem is, the more you think about it the more unanswered questions come up. AMD or the cell processor from IBM make better options if this is a purely technological move. Preannouncing the deal will likely crush Apple's sales for the next 18 months as Mac usrers wait on their new platforms to come out. So wtf is going on here. Read on to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Spoiler: What if Intel is just finally so sick of MS that they are planning to stage a coup?

I hope so. Competition is good for the soul....and your bank balance.

Hehe...amusing read. No way it's going to happen.

Apple has fought long and hard for the brand. Steve isn't the kind of CEO who's going to give it all away just to help Intel see M$'s back broken. Additionally, Steve and Phil have already stated that Mac OS is not going to be made available on generic x86 machines. The biggest profit center Apple has is in it's hardware, and it's integration with the OS. To lose that margin would mean certain doom. So there really isn't any value in letting Intel have the OS w/o it. And why sell it to Intel when Apple's doing very well at the moment thankyouverymuch. :)

For a historical perspective, remember the ill-fated Mac clone deals that almost bankrupt the company? Nah, we'll not see that again. :) My guess is that Intel and Apple are cooking up a processor which addresses Altivec and 64-bit processing. It's so glaringly obvious how could they not? Steve is very sharp...he wouldn't make a move this big unless a) it'll help *Apple* do what *Apple* wants to do, which is continue developing the best hardware and software in the computer market.

(these are my musings alone, not those of my company, which incidentally is Apple). :)
