Jack Thompson can bite my ...!

I've pretty much stayed away from the whole debacle surrounding the GTA hot coffee mod. The pundits have it pretty well covered and it just seems too stupid for words to me. (BTW !S Rockstar!)

I do have to give props to Broken Toys for putting up a great rundown and if you haven't read Maddox's take on it you are missing out. But Blue's News has got just about the most insightful e-mail correspondance with this Mr. Thompson fellow and as one would expect, he's a supreme asshat. His rundown on Janet Reno being a lesbian is about the most delusional (I'm not for a second saying she isn't a lesbian, I just don't care) bit of mud throwing evah. Must read this stuff.

Why then am I blathering on about this drivel today? Well, you see, we just got the Battleground Europe ESRB rating today...yup, M for Mature. I don't know if you've ever actually played games like say this GTA everyone talks about or hell even watched a TV soap opera or CSI but there is stuff out there in the general media space that is actually MATURE. So thanks Jack. Now I probably can't ever get a new Ferrari like John Romero because Wally World won't stock my wares and I'll be forced to die an obscure game designer who never got to smooch on Stevie Case because you sir are a troll. Thanks again. Oh and by the way, incase anyone missed it, his email address is Jack Thompson [mailto:jackpeace@comcast.net]. Don't do anything I wouldn't do...

If all games of WWIIOL's graphic content are getting M ratings, then buyers of these types of games (1st person shooters) won't be shopping for them at WalMart or whatever stores don't carry M games. WalMart won't have anything in stock except puzzle games.

I'm assuming that is the problem you are attributing to the M rating.

Actually I thought Walmart wouldn't carry AO (Adults Only) games. This is what GTA:SA was upgraded to after the hotcoffee fiasco.

Im pretty sure they carry M games no?

Well the publishers have said its not really a big deal, I just find it funny that with literally no change to the (or very little) content and blood that we now have an M rating up from our previous TEEN.

Hey! Don't burst the Goph's rant-bubble by informing him that Wally Mart carries Mature titles, even when a simple web search would show that they carry plenty of them. You must embrace the rant, irregardless of its relation to reality.

So..if I don't run flash, the battlegroundeurope.com site is going to be utterly useless, right?

Great planning there. Flash is teh suck for information sites (moderately ok for cartoons and games).

And thanks for the 3 point size font for "sound off", anonymous flasshmasster. Couldn't have a button there like every freaking where else, just text. Brilliant!

WW2OL needs more blood and gore anyway. All other FPS's have more of it, but few have such large calibure weaponary to really show off what happens when a 155mm shell fired from 6 kilometers away hits someone or a 500kg bomb dropped from 9000 feet above you lands on your foot.

Take this an advantage and add some more realism. The sounds mikes done when someone dies is a good start.

(Coolest moment I've ever had in game: a axis DD was shelling the Steenbergan FB from the coast. Nailed a Matty driving out of the FB with a direct hit. Who needs an ordanance server).

Yeah!

Now that you have an M rating....might as add more blood and gore, staying within the M rating sprcification of course.

Eh?

Well, there is one change that may have crossed a line, and it's a stupid and arbitrary line.

Screams when hit.

Like I said, it's a stupid line, but I could see them saying that makes it realistic enough to rate an M.

I wonder what this means for the forums :o

Well I know they sell M games its just that the publishers say its harder to get them to stock it unless you have 100k pre-orders. Otherwise they are not interested.

Screaming when hit is the only difference to "death" that I can think of?

A couple random death animations maybe?

And the scream, right?

Theres no more "gore" today than there was on 6-6-01.

There is "vehicular gore" now too, all depends on how picky they're being.

You should be happy. You'll sell a LOT more copies when there's a big MATURE on the box.

A lot of games TRY for an M ratings because they know if they get some stupid low rating everyone will immediately assume it's a silly kids game.

It's like movies. March of the Penguins is one hell of a depressing and harsh dramatic movie(a lot of very angry consevative christian mothers in the theatre after the show). It was wildly popular just about everywhere it was shown. Someone in the US decides to give that movie a G rating(they must have never watched it) and suddenly it's advertised as a kiddie movie for 4 year olds. People assume it's crap, and they never even consider watching it.

Besides, you guys could use some controversy to sell the game. ;)
