GameDevMike

GameDevMike gives WWIIOL a little press this morning as he returns to the game. I think he pretty much nails the state of the game for most users. Fun, with as little or as much time commitment as you need, but needs some engine updates. Good news Mike, we're on it.

Cursing, I fumbled for my pistol. The end was near, but I wasn’t going down until I had nothing left to fight with. Once all of the pistol ammo was used up, I still had a knife to fall back on. I raised back up, pistol in hand, scanning the plaza for the enemy. He had moved while I was out of sight. I had expected him to, but I wasn’t down long enough for him to have made it to the CP. A bullet ricocheted off the edge of the window. The sound of the shot came from the plaza, but where? I felt sick when I realized that there were so many bodies out there that he was probably hiding amongst them. Another shot, another miss. This time, though, the movement he made while working the bolt caught my eye. I quickly took aim and fired…
Great stuff Mike. He also has a few gems in the archive, like the post on OGL font rendering. One of my personal pet peeves still lingering from "teh gut uld days".

Given all the vets out there, it's curious how the worthwhile reviews tend to focus on either the infantry or the aircraft game-modes.

By many accounts, the tank-platoon-vs-tank-platoon PvP game is the best in existence. Of course, the present gameplay structure tends to prevent tank-vs-tank combat... or more accurately, it forces short-range, combined-arms gameplay, with tanks engaging infantry and AT weapons. Maybe the reason one doesn't see reviews of tank-vs-tank gameplay is that at present it simply isn't very common.

Possibly that'll be able to change with the introduction of TOEs plus some engagement-shaping mechanics.

It's alway good in a review to have the readers told that the game in question is ***The Best*** in a particular modality.

I spent a long time working on a narrative of a heavy, well organized Allied attack on St.Nik from Stekene and Hulst that was barely beaten off by fortunate (and entirely coincidental) arrival in St. Nik of the entire 23rd Panzer back when the 23rd was German). Closest thing I've seen to a true 'meeting engagement'.
It was a terrific fight that went on for hours. Both sides had extremely able commanders, skilled people, and it wasn't just a matter of hordes of people swarming - it seemed that it was two very skilled forces, neither willing to accept defeat.
I never finished it. I need to get back in & playing again.
