I Always Wanted to be an Astronaut

Killer and I were talking about this and we really want to submit a proposal. What better place to steal great ideas than from you guys! C'mon, be a part of the future. Ask not what Playnet can do for you but what you can do for Gophur And Killer!

You should definitely have a space theme. Maybe even a rocket or two.

Gotta have railguns and lasers.

Always thought you guys had a nice setup to do a modern war version and a space based one. You can call it battleground: above europe lol

Seriously that would be cool.

This is funny, I submitted a similar concept to the European Space Agency 2 years ago. Never got a response thought.

It sounds like they want a realistic Second Life with a physics model down to molecules.

STEM activities fundamentally revolve around innovative investigation. How would you code-simulate the technical creative/analytical process without unrealistically limiting player action choices?

They say they want their game to support strategic thinking, interpretative analysis, problem solving, plan formulation and execution, team-building and collaboration, and adaptation to rapid change. CRS's code base does all of that now...but in regard to action management and human interactions. It's simulation code, based on pre-definition of actions and outcomes. Pre-coded simulation isn't going to be a satisfactory approach for modeling STEM work processes beyond a young-teen understanding level. For that, they'll need that physics model down to molecules.

Keep us up to date with this Gophur, this sounds very exciting and you have the technical competences to be asked to take part to the project.

I'm following the WWIIol project because of the educationnal aspect and the amazing social relations I could observe here since 2002. If there's a company with a good experience for this vision, it's you.

Good luck with this !

@J

I'm with you. What I'm really having trouble wrapping my head around is what types of content to fill this world with. Is it like the lego MMO? Do they want to just have rooms (places) with differing experiments (quests) to complete?

What is the intended age profile for this game/sim?

My guess is that by high school age, STEM-types are unlikely to be intellectually interested in predictable-outcome, structured-path quests revolving around finding things or fighting opponents.

Games are inherently structured though. That's the rub. You can't discover something in a game (generally) that wasn't part of a preconceived path. That's fine for education but it is pretty worthless for discovery (not exploration).

If there are tasks and experiments to simulate for the player to complete then that can be doable. You could even require them to be collaborative. Interesting might be difficult.

Hi Gophur,

Did you finally submit something ?

o I didn't. I couldn't wrap my head around what we could do as a company that I was into. I liked some thoughts on a VW style learning environment but that isn't our forte. We did as a company submit as part of another companies bid but I'm not sure I am cleared to discuss that.

With that PRC announcement, all efforts should be put into that anyway.

If that business is serious, maybe it would be a good strategy to hire 3 or 4 more (old) guys to boost the game development a bit, as if you started a new project. A release in PRC could be a lot more violent then the one in 2001...

Or even 10 guys, for a 3-year contract and with no wage, but each recieve a % of new active subscriptions during that period. Or such a kind of motivation that allows you develop without money.

In fact I don't know, it depends of a lots of parameters.
I'm really happy you get this opportunity for the project ! Gold builders did a good investment.
