Area-ee!!1!

"Areae, Inc. is a company dedicated to taking the tired old virtual world and making it into something fresh and new." WoW has seven MILLION subscribers and the virtual world is old and tired. Who knew?

Most people for whom WoW isn't their first MMO and probably those 14k furries over in the Weird Life. To be honest, I'm intrigued. While Raph has both equal parts of scorn and adoration in my secretSpace, I think if you look through his past accomplishments and his recent talks you can guesstimate where this is headed. Where its going may be a whole other story. Who can say, but if you can screw up Star Wars you can pretty much accomplish anything in my book, and no I'm not talking about the post renaissance screw ups (disclosure: I define my life pre and post '77).

I'm gonna bet on a vision of the web as a virtual world, MMO 2.0. Its the rage these days. And really, if there's anyone whose poised to lead that charge, Raph is probably it. While I can't say I've agreed with all of his past positions on things I can say that he is a maverick in the industry and that is what is needed to make a bold step that may or may not pan out but will benefit all of us, as designers and players, regardless of the outcome. Amber agrees, I think, but in a much more honest way.

Peter Molyneaux at GDC

This is an amazing demo of some of the things that Peter is exploring. What I wouldn't give to have an R&D budget. many thanks to ahwulf for the linkage.

Tribute

From the forums, with Holiday Cheer!

This is the greatest and best patch in the world... Tribute.

Long time ago me and my brother Doc here,
We was hitchhikin' down a long and lonesome roadmap of dev.
All of a sudden, there shined a shiny horde of players.. in the middle... of the road.
And they said:

"Make the best patch in the world, or we'll eat your soul." Soul, soul, soul....

Well me and Doc, we looked at each other,
and we each said... "Okay, mate."

And we dev'd the first patch that game to our heads,
Just so happened to be,
The Best Patch in the World, it was The Best Patch in the World.

Look into my eyes and it's easy to see
One dot two four was done, now one dot two five will be
It was totally bug free.
Once every hundred-thousands versions or so,
When the sun doth shine and the moon doth glow
And the fog doth grow...

Needless to say, the horde was stunned.
Whip-crack went their Whippy tails,
And the horde had fun.
They asked us: "(snort) Be you angels?"
And we each said, "Nay. We are but Devs."
Rock!
Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh-ah-ah,
Ohhh, whoah, ah-whoah-oh!

This is not The Greatest Patch in the World, no.
This is just a tribute.
Couldn't remember The Greatest Patch in the World, no, no.
This is a tribute, oh, to The Greatest Patch in the World,
All right! It was The Greatest Patch in the World War II Online,
All right! It was the best muthafrakin' patch the greatest patch in the world.

Beep oo bleep mmm ba da dippy dip dee
Fleegle geegle, fleegle geegle

And the peculiar thing is this my friends:
the Patch we dev'd on that fateful night it didn't actually look anything like this patch!

This is just a tribute! You gotta believe it!
And I wish you were there! Just a matter of opinion.
Ah, frak! Good God, God lovin',
So surprised to find you can't stop it.
All right! All right!

Microsoft Robotics Studio

Ok, this might be the coolest thing all week. Cooler than a Firefly MMO, check. Cooler than a Fallout MMO? Close, but, yes it is, check. MS today released their software suite for robots and in case you can't afford a $40k Pioneer robot to play with, the suite comes with a simulated bot. Best of all, you don't even have to pay for a license as long as you are just using it for personal world domination.

Unreal eh? Guess i know what I'm doing this weekend...oh right, we're still grinding away hoping to release an update before the holidays that doesn't completely tank. And when I say we, I do not mean me. I am more of the release it when its ready, I don't care if it took 6 months kinda guy. Apparently not everyone learns their lessons. Good for them that technically its my ass on the line. Ok, so there's a little stress around here at present. Guess I'll play with this over the holiday break.

Ai

One of the things I am regularly tasked to do is industry watch and subsequent technology review. I saw today that Turbine had licensed a cool new middle ware AI solution. They've got some pretty cool demos up on the site for Kynogon.

When we think AI for WWIIOL we tend to think about the little gunners everywhere but there are other solutions as well. Convoys and supply come to mind but so do AI gunners for planes, seamen running around the decks of boats, automated wingmen or guards and civilians even. Where does your mind wander for AI in a game like ours? Flocks of sheep? Gas station attendants? Fully interactive French farm girls?

EA says we're crazy!

Actually one of their Canadiens was chattin aboot the cost of game development and got covered by gamesindustry.biz. You know that site that always makes Firefox think its a phishing site? Anyhoo, ole Tascan talks about how not all EA teams are monsters that are eating up the midway and in turn spending billions to bring you the mext Motorcity Online. No instead they have many "small" teams of 35 to 85 members. Yep, you heard that right, that's less than a hundred. Sometimes a LOT less.

Sure he goes on to say, small teams without billions to spend still have a place in the biz cause "there are, like, mobile games and casual games, you know, like that Burger King stuff on that console thing?" (note: quote not attributable to persons mentioned in article)

If Uwe can make a media splash outta boxing I think Greg Costikyan should take this guy down. he's my all time hero for small business games. If it came to a match we'd probably buy a dozen tickets or so, since that's like all the developers and artists and producers we use to make a MMO, that puts out regular content patches and does junk like, you know, military contracts and stuff.

Listen up kids. You don't need a gajillion dollars and 500 people to make a profitable business in this space. What you need is a solid idea, a good plan to execute it and some capital to hold you through development. In a way, that's about 90% of any successful business. Funny how that works eh? The first lesson of running a game based business is the same as running any other business. That's right, remember that 90% of ALL business is essentially the same but the 10% difference is the most important. Run your shop like that and you'll be successful out there.

Inifinity: The Quest For Earth - Planet Landing/Take Off

This is about the coolest thing I've seen in forever. Cooler than avatars in EVE even.
