GameDevMike

GameDevMike gives WWIIOL a little press this morning as he returns to the game. I think he pretty much nails the state of the game for most users. Fun, with as little or as much time commitment as you need, but needs some engine updates. Good news Mike, we're on it.

Cursing, I fumbled for my pistol. The end was near, but I wasn’t going down until I had nothing left to fight with. Once all of the pistol ammo was used up, I still had a knife to fall back on. I raised back up, pistol in hand, scanning the plaza for the enemy. He had moved while I was out of sight. I had expected him to, but I wasn’t down long enough for him to have made it to the CP. A bullet ricocheted off the edge of the window. The sound of the shot came from the plaza, but where? I felt sick when I realized that there were so many bodies out there that he was probably hiding amongst them. Another shot, another miss. This time, though, the movement he made while working the bolt caught my eye. I quickly took aim and fired…
Great stuff Mike. He also has a few gems in the archive, like the post on OGL font rendering. One of my personal pet peeves still lingering from "teh gut uld days".

New Kitteh!

Krieger and Kimmie got a new kitteh this week. Naturally, this darlings first act was to PLOT TO TAKE OVER TEH WURLDZ! Shannon has been pining for a new kit as well so I'm pretty sure this will seal the deal.

Yay Testing!

I love testing. Really I do. As a senior Producer at a small company I get to do just about everything which means I get to change hats a lot which is fun. This week my hat tells me that I have to read every post on the closed and open testing sites, create all the bug and feature and change request tickets then build the results and publish them with a change log. Too much for one man you say! Only when I have to decipher this stuff:

2007-07-15 11:41:19 sgtrose French Groupe de Bombardement III/12 phenom mission Eindhoven
"h87 can crash thought and into bldgs"
My game now crashes thought. Well that'll be a problem I think...

Would you play a horror MMO?

Interesting that there are 112 posts on the topic and almost all of them say yes. Seems like there's a niche to fill...maybe. The problem is of course that a Horror based MMO would not work without some very inventive, non men in tights design, and that stuff is hard and by hard I mean usually doesn't work.MMOs are shared spaces. Sharing a space is counter to the basic premise of surprise or fear needed in the horror genre. Horror requires an insane ammount of good atmosphere and scene and event control. Those things are best for an instanced experience like single player. Throw in that unlike Silent Hill, SHOnline would have FrightBott up and running in 2 days and the entire experience would be documented and destroyed. Hmm. maybe I'll go read the rest of those responses and see if I can be persuaded otherwise cause a horror MMO sounds like a fun design challenge.

WWIIOL How To: Spiral Climb Kill a Spit in a 109

Very nice tutorial on the classic sucker punch on a Spit. Someone should add this to the Wiki if it isn't already up there. *hint*
